Matteo Pazzona - Persistent Commodity Shocks and Transitory Crime Effects

Meeting Room 1, Campus San Giobbe, Venezia

Abstract: This paper studies the dynamic response of crime to a positive income shock. We exploit the recent commodity boom to estimate the short- and medium-run effect of an increase in copper price on criminal activity in Chile, the world’s leading copper producer. After a decade of high prices, mining municipalities did not exhibit lower crime rates compared to non-mining municipalities. To explain this counterintuitive result, we investigate heterogeneous dynamic effects and observe that property crimes were only significantly reduced at the beginning of the boom. Finally, we report that the price shock had similar temporary effects on unskilled employment.
