Project proposal under review

Castles, Fields, and Herds: The Interaction of Ismailis, Sunnis, and Mongols in Eastern Iran.
The project aims to explore the symbiotic relationship that links fortified settlements to the countryside in Quhistān (Eastern Iran) in the age of the Ismaili apogee. We will bring together competences from Islamic historical studies, archaeology, and anthropology to investigate the rise, the development and the abandonment of two different modes of anthropization that dominated Quhistān between the 11th and 13th century.

To achieve this aim, the researcher Dr. Massimiliano Borroni will undertake a study of the historical evolution of environmental concepts in the Arab-speaking world that allows us to outline a precise picture of the current situation.
