Since 2001 Lucio Milano has been Full Professor of History of the Ancient Near East at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, where he was appointed as Associate Professor in 1992.

He graduated in Arts and Humanities at “La Sapienza” University of Rome in 1975. In 1976 he was awarded a three-year scholarship from the Research National Council (CNR). From 1981 to 1991 he worked as Researcher at the Institute for Ancient Near Eastern Studies of “La Sapienza” University. Over time he has held teaching assignments abroad (UCLA, Cornell University, EPHE, among others).

He has been Principal Investigator of three PRIN Projects of the Ministry of Education, University and Research and the Director of a series of other projects funded by Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, by the Research National Council and by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Among other scientific affiliations, he is a member of the Istituto Veneto di Scienze Lettere ed Arti.

His research activity has mainly focused on economic and social history of Syria and Mesopotamia between the 3rd and 2nd millennia BCE. With reference to this field of studies he has published three monographs with critical editions of cuneiform texts from the Royal Archives of Ebla/Tell Mardikh and from other Syrian sites (Tell Mozan, Tell Leilan, Tell Beydar).

He is Editor-in-Chief of the Ebla Digital Archives (EbDA) project, a database devoted to the study of the Ebla documents providing annotated editions of the cuneiform texts and advanced digital tools for their lexical and linguistic analysis.

He has been working for several years on a project concerning the final stage of the Akkadian domination in Mesopotamia. On this subject he has published, so far, a monographic study in collaboration with A. Westenholz (L. Milano – A. Westenholz, The “Shu-ilisu Archive” and Other Sargonic Texts in Akkadian, Bethesda, 2015).

Since 2018 he is Director of the “Wasit Regional Survey” (Iraq), a project in collaboration with the State Board of Antiquities and Heritage of the Republic of Iraq aiming at mapping archaeological sites and providing a sketch of the historical and geographical development in the area. In previous years (starting in 1997) he has also acted as director of the Archaeological Mission of Ca’ Foscari University at Tell Beydar (Syria). In the framework of the Beydar Project, he has been leading a program on paleo-environmental studies, part of which has been published as L. Milano - M. Lebeau eds., Tell Beydar: Environmental and Technical Studies II, Tournhout, 2014).

One of his main research topics is that of the history of food in the ancient Near East. He has written numerous essays on the subject, organized conferences, and edited publications (see lately L. Milano ed., Paleonutrition and Food Practices in the Ancient Near East, Padua, 2014).

For the last fifteen years, he has co-directed (with prof. Ettore Cingano) an Excellency Program in Higher Education (“Summer Institute in the Humanities” based at Venice International University).

His engagement in academic publication activity includes the co-direction of the international peer reviewed journal KASKAL, the direction of the monographic series Antichistica, and the participation in the Editorial Board of Subartu.

Academic appointments: Rector’s delegate for International Relations (Socrates Program – 1995-1999); member of the History Degree Program Committee (2000-2004; 2006-2008); President of the 10th Area Committee for Research Evaluation (2004); Deputy Director of the Department of Humanities (2007-2010; 2014-2017); Director’s delegate for the Archaeology and Epigraphy Labs of the Department of Humanities (2013-2018); member of CSA (2016-2021); Director’s delegate for the International Relations of the Department of Humanities (2017-2020).

 

 

Lucio Milano è nato a Roma il 30 marzo 1951. La sua formazione orientalistica si è svolta presso l’Università “La Sapienza” dove si è laureato in Lettere nel 1975 sotto la guida di Mario Liverani. E’ stato per alcuni anni borsista del CNR e successivamente Ricercatore Universitario alla “Sapienza“ presso il  Dip. di Scienze Storiche, Archeologiche, Antropologiche dell’Antichità. Vincitore di un concorso per Professore Associato nel 1991, è stato chiamato dall’Università Ca’ Foscari di Venezia, dove da allora è titolare dell’insegnamento di Storia del Vicino Oriente antico. Dal 2001 è Professore Ordinario di questa materia. Per molti anni ha ricoperto incarichi di insegnamento di altre discipline orientalistiche presso la stessa università (Assiriologia; Filologia semitica; Archeologia e Storia dell’Arte del Vicino Oriente).

Ha avuto incarichi di insegnamento all’estero (UCLA, Cornell University, Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes). E’ stato Visiting Fellow del Center for Advanced Studies a Monaco di Baviera. E’ membro del Collegio dei docenti del Dottorato Interateneo in Scienze dell’Antichità e della Scuola di Specializzazione in Beni Archeologici.

Svolge da tempo attività di direzione e coordinamento di progetti di ricerca finanziati dal MIUR, dal  MAE e dall’Ateneo (progetti PRIN: coord. locale 2001-2003; coord. nazionale 2003-2005, 2006-2008, 2009-2011, 2015-2017), e di consulenza scientifica come valutatore e supervisore di progetti nazionali (PRIN, FIRB) e internazionali (Marie-Curie, ERC, CNRS ecc.).

La sua attività di ricerca si è soprattutto concentrata sulla storia economica e sociale della Siria e della Mesopotamia tra il III e il II millennio a.C.

Con riferimento a questo campo di studi ha pubblicato diverse monografie e numerosi articoli con edizioni critiche di testi cuneiformi provenienti dagli Archivi Reali di Ebla / Tell Mardikh (Archivi Reali di Ebla – Testi IV e IX) e da altri siti siriani (Tell Mozan, Tell Leilan, Tell Beydar).

E’ Editor in Chief  del progetto Ebla Digital Archives (EbDA), un database dedicato allo studio dei documenti di Ebla, che include applicazioni per l’analisi di dati linguistici e lessicali.

Lavora da diversi anni ad un progetto che riguarda la fase finale dell’impero di Akkad. Su questo argomento ha pubblicato un volume monografico in collaborazione con Aage Westenholz) riguarda la storia dell'impero di Akkad nella sua fase finale (The Šu-ilisu Archive and Other Sargonic Texts in Akkadian, CDL Press 2015).

Dal 2018 è direttore del “Wasit Regional Survey” (Iraq), un progetto in collaborazione con lo State Board of Antiquities and Heritage della Repubblica dell’Iraq per la mappatura dei siti archeologici e lo studio storico-geografico della regione. Dal 1997 in avanti ha inoltre diretto la Missione Archeologica di Ca’ Foscari a Tell Beydar (Siria orientale). Nell’ambito del Progetto Beydar ha diretto un programma di studi paleo-ambientali vd. L. Milano - M. Lebeau (eds.), Tell Beydar: Environmental and Technical Studies II, Brepols 2014).

Tra i temi di ricerca da lui maggiormente sviluppati vi è quello della storia dell’alimentazione nell’area del Vicino Oriente antico. Ha scritto sull’argomento saggi ed articoli, organizzato e curato atti di Convegni internazionali: tra i più recenti, L. Milano (ed.), Paleonutrition and Food Practices in the Ancient Near East: Towards a Multidisciplinary Approach, Padua 2014.

Negli ultimi 15 anni ha co-diretto (con il prof. Ettore Cingano) il “Summer Institute for the Humanities”, un Progetto di Alta Formazione per lo studio comparato delle letterature greca, romana e del Vicino Oriente, presso Venice International University, finanziato dal MIUR.

E’ codirettore della rivista KASKAL, (classe A) dedicata alla storia e all’archeologia del Vicino Oriente, direttore della collana Antichistica (ECF) e membro dell’Editorial Board della collana Subartu (Brepols)

Incarichi accademici: Delegato del Rettore per il Programma Socrates (1995-1999): Membro del Collegio didattico di Storia (2000-2004; 2006-2008); Membro del Gruppo di Lavoro sulla Valutazione della Qualità della Ricerca (2013-2014); Vice-direttore del Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici (2007-2010; 2014-2017); Delegato all’Internazionalizzazione (2017-2020) e Responsabile dei Laboratori di Archeologia dello stesso dipartimento (2013-2018).
