2012: the competition changes! Not only the University of Bari, but also the European universities of Vienna, Warwick and Zagreb will take part in the rowing race against the Venetian team. This year the challenge is more international and multi-cultural, the race will be taken on the Grand Canal and it will be very exciting: one run competed on the 750 meters that separate Rialto Bridge and Ca’ Foscari. As long as we study in Venice, the students of the venetian universities or from any other countries are part of the inhabitants of this city. This is what they feel, this is what the city of Venice does feel and this is the meaning of their involvement at the Historical Regatta.
The university rowing race was founded in 2005 and at first it involved only the two universities of Venice: Ca’ Foscari and IUAV. The challenge became a tradition and confirmed the passion of the youth for the rowing. The event was settled to bring them closer to the rowing and venetian tradition: the fight for their emblems was, and still is, a way to live the university experience with a different kind of enthusiasm. The first challenges consisted of two runs of about 750 meters, starting from Rialto Bridge and finishing in the front of Ca’ Foscari. It took place in the pauses between the competitions of caorline and gondolini that are part of the performance in the Historcal Regatta. On the occasion of this event, the boats for the race have always been provided by the city committee and, on the second run, are exchanged to guarantee greater equity.
After five years, in 2010, the challenge of the university students in the competitions of Historical Regatta is completely different. The participation is not restricted only to the universities of Venice, but it is also widen to those related to nautical traditions or closed to the ancient maritime republics. So Venice becomes the challenger and the students of Ca’ Foscari and IUAV teamed together setting up only one mixed crew to challenge the best of the other teams. In 2010 the contenders were Genoa, Pisa and Salerno, in 2011 Trieste and Bari joined the competition as well.
This year the event will have a wider participation with the addition of the teams made up of students of three important European universities.
