The Ca’ Foscari entrance hall is a large hall ‘a crozzola’ (L-shaped floor plan). On one side it opens onto the internal courtyard, whilst the other side overlooks a bend in the Grand Canal, offering a wide, sweeping view from the Rialto Bridge to the Accademia complex. The impressive water door provides direct access to the canal. In fact, for the Historical Regatta the “machina”, a floating wooden structure, representing the race’s finishing line, is built in front of the water door. This area is characterised by a Gothic column with a flower-shaped capital and an elegant nineteenth century staircase that leads to the building’s “piani nobili” (main floors). Carlo Scarpa was responsible for the restoration of this space in 1936 and he masterfully integrated the sixteenth century ambience with modern decorative elements, such as the special lighting fixtures and the handrail on the staircase.
