Educational Goals

The goal of this course is to describe the main kinds of information
systems, focusing in particular on web-based information systems that
are relevant to the tourism business. Further, the students will be
introduced to the basis of relational databases and Web site design.
The students will learn how to design simple Web sites, model and query
simple databases, and devise the more suitable kind of information
system for a given business.
The course involves a significant practical part, whose aim is to
focus on the study of relational databases fundamentals, and on the basic techniques for the development of Web pages.

The course will be composed of two modules.

Module 1

- Information systems: kinds of information systems, e-commerce and
fundamentals of security, geographical information systems
- Databases: conceptual design, relational model, logical design, the
SQL language



Module II

-The client/server architecture.
-Computer networks and network protocols.
-Web usability and accessibility.
-The markup languages, hypertexts and the HTML language.
-The use of style sheets. The CSS.
-Statical and dynamical Web pages: introduction to Javascript and PHP.

Practical excercises: the creation of Web pages via the Adobe Dreamweaver program.
