Educational Goals
To prepare students for study in an increasingly international context, the course will develop skills in reading and translation of specialist texts, oral presentation, and academic and professional writing. Special attention will be paid to the discipline-specific language of artistic studies.
After the course, within their specific field of study, students will be able to
understand an academic text with knowledge of the specialist lexis of the sector;
present academic material and interact on topics related to their studies;
produce a written academic text (chronological, descriptive);
produce texts useful for international study (CV, formal correspondence, e-mails etc).
Requirements
The B1 entrance test is preparatory to the English Language examination. The test is managed by the University Language Centre (CLA) in three sessions: October, February, July.
The B1 test has different value according to the year of enrollment:
- students enrolled between the 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 academic year (3 credits) - FT0289 PRIMA LINGUA (INGLESE)
- students enrolled from the 2010/11 academic year (entrance test) - FT0359 TEST DI INGLESE
Students will bring proof of having passed the test to the English Language examination.

Students who need revision at the B1 level can attend preparatory courses which will be held in September, January and June. Information and material are available on my personal page AVVISI and Materiale didattico > Idoneità B1.
N.B. It is not necessary to have passed the B1 test to attend courses.
Contents
The lectures will focus on the analysis and translation of specialist texts related to artistic studies. They will look at features of formal register (lexis, syntax, morphology) and contrastive grammar. The phonological system of British and American English will also be studied.
The tutorials (lettorati) will focus on reading and oral presentation of academic texts related to humanistic disciplines; the production of academic texts (descriptive, chronological); production of texts useful for international study (CV, formal correspondence, e-mails etc)

Teaching Methods
The lecture course will be held in the first and second periods, with two weekly meetings, for a total of 45 hours. It will be repeated in the third and fourth periods. The three tutorials will be repeated throughout the year. Each tutorial will have 20 hours teaching time.

Attendance is warmly recommended. Non-attendees are required to prepare the programme covered in class; there is no alternative programme. Students who attend the tutorials will have a reduced examination programme, both written and oral.
