Educational Goal
The course is organized into two parts: the first is designed to provide a knowledge and understanding of the fundamental elements of the mediaeval period. An in-depth study of specific themes offers the student a first contact with research tools and with the problems of historiographical method
Requirements
Enrolment for the course is not dependent on passing an entrance test or specific exams. The degree dissertation will require a knowledge of Latin and palaeography.
Contents
The syllabus will focus on "General lines of Medieval history. From the IV century to the early 1400s: in the area of continental Europe and the Mediterranean world". In particular the course will develop the following themes:
The subjects brought into closer focus will be: A) the Middle Ages as a historiographical concept - B) romanitas and barbaritas - C) popes, emperors and christianitas - D) from Islamic expansion to the Crusades - E) The population growth and the adventure of trade - F) the Early and Late Middle Ages: differences in social sensibility and environmental context - G) changing patterns of international equilibrium in the XIII and XIV centuries.
Students will be advised of seminars and other study opportunities that would complement the course.
Recommended Reading List
Basic preparation for the course will be through reference to a general history of the Middle Ages, to be chosen by the student. For example: "Storia medievale. Manuale" Donzelli; "La societa medievale", edd. S. COLLODO and G. PINTO, Monduzzi Editore; R. COMBA , "L'età medievale", Loescher; E. PETERS, "Europe and the Middle Ages", Prentice Hall; G. SPINI, "Disegno storico della civiltà italiana", vol. II, "Il Medioevo", Cremonese; M. MONTANARI, "Storia medievale", Laterza; G. VITOLO, "I caratteri originali di un'eta di transizione", Sansoni. Advice will be provided during lessons or student-staff consultation sessions. Recommendations as to additional reading for special focus subjects will be made during the course. As well as having a knowledge of general mediaeval history, students are expected read at least one of the volumes listed below. In this connection it is suggested that students intending to follow the lessons should read "Lupi, genti, culture", which is specifically relevant to a part of the course.
This is a list of works from which the student may choose to extend his or her knowledge of special focus subjects on the basis of personal specific interests. All students are in any case required to choose a volume to be included as an integral part of the examination. Examinees who have not attended lessons are required to have read two of the volumes listed below.

Assessment
The first session following the end of the course will comprise a written examination. Students’ answers will be required to take account of the contents of course lectures. Subsequent sessions will comprise oral examinations. It's possible to sit the exam in English, French and Spanish.
Teaching Language

Other
Students who follow the lessons are strongly advised to take the examination as soon as possible after the end of the course.
