Educational Goals
The main objective of the course is to introduce students to Francophone cultures (mainly Haitian and Caribbean), from an historical, linguistical and anthropological point of view.
Requirements
Basic knowledge of French language; quite good ability to read French (reading comprehension)
Contents
Main topics: French-speaking Caribbean history (discovery, conquest, colonization and slavery, struggles for independence), socio-linguistics (French-Creole diglossia and bilingualism), religion (voodoo), folklore, literature. Seminars on French Canadian, French-speaking African and French-speaking North African cultures.
