His research activity is mainly concerned with the items:

1)      Preparation and characterization of nanocluster composite glasses by ion implantation, ion exchange, rf sputtering deposition.

2)      Preparation and characterization of rare earth-doped glasses by ion implantation, ion exchange, rf sputtering deposition.

3)      Physics and chemistry of diffusion and aggregation processes of metals in glass.

4)      Linear and nonlinear optical characterization of thin films.

5)      X-ray absorption experiments using a synchrotron radiation source.

E.C. has collaborated with foreign Institutions, namely, Vanderbilt University (Nashville, USA, as visiting scientist), CSNSM (Orsay, France), Moscow State University (Moscow, Russia), Central Glass Laboratory (Calcutta, India). E.C. has been main proposer of (and/or participant to) 29 experiments at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, and 2 at the ELETTRA Sincrotrone in Trieste.

E.C. is referee for 29 international Journals in the fields of Materials Science, Physics, Optics, and a member of the Editorial Board of the scientific journal “ISRN Nanotechnology”. Author or co-author of about 130 publications since 1992, 118 of which in international refereed Journals. Co-author of 2 contributions in encyclopaedias on nanocluster composite glasses. His "h-index" is 25 (ISI Web of Knowledge + Scopus).

Laureato in Fisica nel 1992 con voto 110/110 e lode. Dottorato di ricerca in Fisica nel 1996. Attività di ricerca proseguita senza interruzione, prima tramite una borsa di studio post-doc dell’Università di Padova e successivamente mediante tre borse di studio semestrali dell’Istituto Nazionale per la Fisica della Materia (INFM). Nei successivi cinque anni, ricercatore a tempo determinato dell’INFM; in seguito, per un anno Collaboratore di Ricerca presso il Dipartimento di Fisica dell'Università degli Studi di Padova e dal 1 Gennaio 2005 ricercatore (ora confermato) presso il Dipartimento di Scienze Molecolari e Nanosistemi dell'Università Ca' Foscari di Venezia (settore FIS/01). L'attività scientifica recente si è rivolta a studio, sintesi (deposizione tramite rf sputtering e scambio ionico) e caratterizzazione (composizionale, strutturale e ottica) di materiali compositi nanostrutturati, in particolare vetri compositi contenenti aggregati metallici di dimensione nanometrica. Ultimamente, parte dell’attività di ricerca ha riguardato anche sistemi costituiti da vetri silicati drogati con terre rare. Sulla base dei suddetti risultati, sono stati ottenuti finanziamenti pubblici ministeriali (progetti PRIN). Dall'anno 1995 ad oggi ha tenuto oltre 30 corsi universitari. Dal 2005 ha avuto inoltre incarichi di docenza presso il master di secondo livello "International Master in Nanotechnologies (IMN)", istituito da CIVEN (Coordinamento Interuniversitario Veneto per le Nanotecnologie).

Ha condiviso la responsabilità scientifica di 29 esperimenti presso la European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, Francia, da lui realizzati tra il 1997 ed il 2011, e dal 2012 di 2 esperimenti presso ELETTRA Sincrotrone Trieste.

Ha pubblicato 118 lavori in riviste internazionali con referees, il primo nel 1992. E' referee per 29 riviste scientifiche internazionali e membro dell’Editorial Board della rivista scientifica “ISRN Nanotechnology”.

E' referee di progetti di ricerca internazionali.
