Obiettivi Formativi

The aim of the seminar is to provide the students with a good understanding of advanced topics in historical linguistics by taking into consideration both the current theoretical debate (e.g. diachronic approaches to the study of languages; selected topics in the syntax of Early English; text linguistics and pragmatics) and its applications in the field of Germanic Philology (e.g. ancient and new editorial practices; translation studies; computational philology applied to Medieval Germanic texts).

Prerequisiti

Basic knowledge of Germanic linguistics is required. The students who did not attend the undergraduate course "Elementi di Linguistica germanica" (Filologia germanica, Mod. 2) are requested to study the following book carefully:

- [foreign students] Campbell, Lyle (2004), Historical Linguistics. An Introduction, 2nd edition, MIT Press.

Contenuti

The course consists in:
A) a series of lectures delivered by the teacher on advanced topics in Historical Linguistics and their applications in the field of Germanic Philology;
B) papers presented by the studends on subjects that will be chosen at the beginning of the course.

Students are required to give a talk and write a final paper on a topic of their choice, subject to approval by the teacher. Both talk and paper are part of the exam, and not a substitute for it.
