Course overview

The ITES master’s degree course aims to train professionals with specific language skills in both specialist and literary interpretation and translation, able to use IT and multimedia techniques and tools. Studies on translation, understood not only as communication, but also as a primary form of mediation, deal with the most diverse linguistic-literary and socio-cultural themes in a comparative and intercultural perspective.
The course is divided into two distinct curricula, Chinese-English and English-Spanish, or of Italian Sign Language, among which there are, however, shared teachings and the possibility for the students of a given curriculum to choose, to a certain extent, from the teachings of the other curriculum, so as to create mixed educational paths.
The course is aimed at graduates of three-year programmes who are already in possession of a good knowledge and command of the Chinese language and culture, or of the English and Spanish language and cultures, and who intend to devote themselves to the specific study of techniques related to interpretation and translation and cultural subjects that constitute an essential foundation.
Given that in Italy, in this master's degree class, Chinese is present as a first language only in three universities, from a comparison with these courses of the same class, it is clear that the Ca' Foscari master's degree course is the only one to offer a path that integrates translation skills with those of interpretation, and the only one to provide the Chinese-English language combination in addition to that of Chinese-Italian, as well as the additional knowledge of Cantonese. As for the English-Spanish curriculum, these languages are the most widespread at international level, and the most requested in the professional reality of the translator and interpreter at all levels. The integration in a single Master's Degree course in the two main European languages and in the more widely used non-European language, together with a specialization both in the field of translation and in that of interpretation makes the educational offer of ITES complete and appealing. Moreover, students in the English-Spanish curriculum may also elect Italian Sign Language and the related translation and interpreting courses alongside one of the other two European languages. This further specialization path makes ITES a one-of-a-kind programme.

Languages available: Chinese and Cantonese.
