Along the way there are Anglo-Norman captions relating to the main stops encountered along the way: from Rome to Sicily, passing through Antioch and Damascus, Armenia and the rich East, crossing Africa, until reaching Jerusalem and Acre. The volume aims to present and evaluate some intervention programmes in which the visuo-gestural modality has been used as a communication and a reading support, in different educational and developmental contexts. Sign language appears to be a valid instrument of inclusion not only for deaf people but also for hearing children, with communication disorders. This is the case of the study we conducted in a primary school class, in which we used sign language as an inclusive means of communication for a non-verbal autistic child. Furthermore, we discuss Sillabiamo, a reading method based on fingerspelling, the manual alphabet used in sign languages. How does syntax interact with context to convey subtle meanings beyond expectations? A branch of the Arabic-Islamic study of rhetoric known as ‘the science of meanings’ (ʿilm-i maʿānī) discusses this point. This volume is an introduction to the Persian science of meanings as it appears in a selection of textbooks published in Iran over the last century. It examines basic concepts, clarifies jargon, and comments on dozens of examples, mainly taken from classical Persian poetry. It also offers insights into how the Arabic model was adapted to Persian and eventually transformed into a literary theory of how Persian poets made the best use of syntactical possibilities.

A Failing Mission?

Salvation in the Jesuit Mission in Japan Under Francisco Cabral

The Jesuit textual production from the sixteenth century leaves no doubt that the Japanese evangelising enterprise was publicised as the epitome of success. Francisco Cabral, third superior of the mission, who had initially shared this judgement, in time began fearing that the mission was, instead, doomed to failure. As he perceived the loosening of the internal ties of the Society of Jesus, and the salvation of the catechumens as more and more independent of that of the Jesuits, Cabral concluded that God had abandoned the mission. This study, using little-known manuscript sources, examines Cabral’s attitudes towards his confreres and the Japanese people, to illuminate how particular salvation mechanics could define early modern Catholic missions.

This book faces two issues: the assessment of movement-derived structures in children with cochlear implants, and the linguistic training based on the explicit teaching of syntactic rules. Participants were tested on the production, comprehension, and repetition of sentences derived by A’ movement. The performance of the children with cochlear implants was compared with the performance of a group of children with normal hearing. Results showed a better performance of hearing children than deaf children, and the typical subject-object asymmetry common to both groups. The History of the Disaster and Captivity of the Morea written by Manthos Ioannou is a historical poem in Greek concerning the Morean War (1714-18). The work testifies to the transmission of historical events in a poetic form; both the historical-literary context and editorial problems are examined. This poem, printed in Venice in the early eighteenth century, was reissued several times until the late nineteenth century. Its high demand in the publishing market makes it possible to compare the various editions from different printers and also to assess who the users of the texts published in Greek in Venice were.

From 1764 to 1770 he travelled to different European countries: Switzerland, Italy, Malta, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Portugal, the British Isles, and Belgium. Brevis introductio ad dictamen by Giovanni di Bonandrea was one of the most popular Latin treatises on ars dictaminis in the fourteenth century. Around the middle of the same century even a Florentine translation of Bonandrea’s work was made, probably for a personal use. This book offers a critical edition of this vernacular version, which is contained in manuscript 2323 of the Biblioteca Riccardiana, which dates from the first half of the fifteenth century. The text, stylistically modest, is linguistically very interesting, as it testifies to the restricted circulation of the ars dictaminis lexicon in the vernacular. The Jesuits, Tycho Brahe, and the Confessionalisation of Science in Seventeenth-Century Lisbon

This is a book about the confessionalisation of science in the early modern period. It discusses the cosmological controversies raised by the appropriation of Tycho Brahe’s astronomical theories within the Jesuit milieu, by focusing on the international community of Jesuit mathematicians who taught astronomy at the College of Santo Antão, Lisbon, between 1615 and 1652. The author argues that the cultural politics of the Counter-Reformation Church curbed the reception of Tycho Brahe in this community. Despite supporting the Tychonic geo-heliocentric system and exploring cosmological ideas produced in Tycho’s Protestant milieu, the Jesuits active in Lisbon strove to confine the authority of the Lutheran astronomer to the domain of mathematics. Philosophy was expected to remain the realm of Catholic orthodoxy.

The translation project of the Sigao Shengjing 思高聖經 or Studium Biblicum Version of the Catholic Bible in Mandarin Chinese was undertaken by the Italian Franciscan missionary Gabriele M. Allegra in 1935. In 1945 he decided to gather a group of collaborators and established the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum Sinense (Sigao Shengjing Xuehui 思高聖經學會), an institute in charge of the translation and publication of the biblical volumes, which still operates today in Hong Kong. The work presented here advances a hypothetical reconstruction of the planning and programming of the building site, the executive process, the construction and decoration, and ultimately the deconsecration and abandonment of an ancient Buddhist stupa. The chronological context is that of the mid-first to the early fourth century CE. The geographical context is the fertile and rich Swat valley, at the foot of the Karakoram-Hindukush, to the north of the ancient region of Gandhara (today in Pakistan). The study is based on archaeological excavation data conducted over several seasons, including the most recent seasons from 2011 to 2014. Refugees and Asylum Seekers in Italy Between Exclusion, Discrimination and Struggles

abstract

This volume analyses exclusion processes, segregation dynamics and the forms of discrimination of refugees and asylum seekers in Italy, where the reception system is marked by opaqueness and arbitrariness and is becoming increasingly similar to the model of “camps”. The numerous vibrant contributions present a fully-fledged system of inferiorization, characterised by labour exploitation, housing discomfort, meagre rights and control strategies, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to a sharp worsening of the health, work, housing and administrative conditions. A framework that has found opposition in the daily resistance and in the struggles of asylum seekers.

Ruskin’s work is strongly embedded in the broad European context, marking an important moment in the movement for the establishment of a community culture and spirit. The essays collected here intend to place the theme of Ruskin’s fruitful and vital relationship with Europe at the centre of a critical reflection, opportunities for an in-depth study and a discussion on issues related to aesthetics, the protection of tangible and intangible heritage, cultural and literary memory. By bringing to the attention of the scientific community the multiple aspects – geographic, historical-artistic, critical-aesthetic, literary, socio-political – of Ruskin’s work from inter- and transcultural perspectives, the volume aims to (re)discover a deliberately European Ruskin and to stimulate new research paths.

abstract

With the Revolution of Dignity (2014), a large representation of the population of Ukraine came out in favour of a geopolitical placement in the EU and NATO. In parallel, Russia intervened in Crimea and the Donbas. Ukrainian society, in addition to dealing with the consequences of a conflict and a delicate geopolitical situation, is searching for its own internal socio-political equilibrium, as the Poroshenko-Zelens'kyj alternation demonstrates. The present collection of studies, involving Italian scholars, focuses on the historical, legal, linguistic, cultural and religious aspects that accompany this adjustment.
