The most important appointment gathering ICT researchers, experts and companies specialized in computer vision - i.e. the interdisciplinary field which developed electronic ‘eyes’, ever-present in our daily lives - was finally hosted in Italy.

From October 22nd to 29th, the Venice Convention Center located in the Palazzo del Cinema on the Lido island hosted the International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV 2017), a biennial congress with 3,000 participants (almost twice as many as in the 2015 edition in Chile) and more than 60 companies - including Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Google and Amazon. Together with the presentation of over 600 scientific publications, the participants took part in 9 short courses and 44 workshops.

“These record numbers confirm how research in computer vision - and, on a broader level, in artificial intelligence - has been growing for the past years at an exponential rate”, explained Marcello Pelillo, as the director of the research group and professor at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. “Such an industrial presence confirms the maturity of a field that only ten years ago was reduced to the academic labs”.

Ca’ Foscari has been active for than twenty years in order to support research on artificial intelligence and computer vision, in particular with regards to machine learning, video analysis, object recognition… for which it gathered substantial funding both from the European Union and from industry.
