MusicaFoscari / San Servolo JAZZ FEST
‘Materials’
November 30th – December 4th 2016

Musicafoscari / San Servolo Jazz Fest returns on November 30th 2016: spanning across five days from November 30th- December 4th 2016, Jazz Fest will be entirely dedicated to free music, contributing to a cross-cultural growth of students and citizenship.

The two traditional venues of the Festival, Teatro Ca’ Foscari and the Auditorium on the Island of San Servolo, will remain for this year’s edition, however, the CFZ- Cultural Flow Zone and Ugo and Olga Levi Foundation and Ca’ Pesaro - International Gallery of Modern Art will also be involved. Modern music enters locations different from concert halls and theaters, communicating with new audiences.

It is now possible to book your seats online for individual shows from here: www.unive.it/jazzfest (you do not need a reservation for Ca’ Pesaro)

Today, Jazz is more than just a genre of music. It is an international community, where especially small bands bring their own music to the test of listeners that are not accustomed to it. This may require continuous decisions on how to use materials. These musicians are, therefore, the composers and performers of their own music and improvisers. There is no limit to the materials used.

In this edition of the festival, Andrea Massaria and Bruce Ditmas dedicate their music to Carla Bley. With Fresh Frozen, Achille Succi and Christopher Culpo propose a tasteful arrangement of jazz experimentation while research on sound, free taste, geometric abstraction and humor characterize the Kaze group. Closer to poetic 'minimalist', for the refined use of subtly varied material, is the performance of Michael Riessler at Ca’ Pesaro: his solo on the bass clarinet will be dubbed on top of another that has been pre-recorded (this is known as Double Fond). Riessler will also be conducting a workshop on jazz improvisation, at the Levi Foundation, the day before the concert  .
The MusicaFoscari / San Servolo JAZZ FEST 2016 will finish at Ca’ Pesaro with In C by Terry Riley, performed by the Timegate Ensemble. In C is an absolute masterpiece of minimalism that has been inseparable from jazz and improvisational practices since the mid 60s. Inaugurating the festival will be a group performance made up of musicians who are all students at the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice - Elettrofoscari Ensemble and Unive Ensemble - and the Unipd Big Band from the University of Padua.

The Festival is organized by the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and San Servolo - Venice Metropolitan Services and sponsored by the City of Venice, in collaboration with the Venice Foundation, Ugo and Olga Levi Foundation, Musei Civici Foundation, the VIU-Venice International University and the "B. Marcello” Conservatory of Music in Venice.
