Rainbows is the new edition of the jazz festival organized by Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and San Servolo srl. which will take place from October 26th to October 29th 2017. The title of this edition recalls the many musical colors of jazz and Terry Riley’s music, which allows for a dialogue between the indetermination of experimental music and jazz improvisation.

On Thursday October 26th at 9pm the festival will be inaugurated with The Claudia Quintet. one of the most innovative bands in New York founded by John Hollenbeck, drummer and composer, four times Grammy Awards nominee.

On Friday October 27th at 8pm the Event Pavilion - the space of the DFS group dedicated to arts and culture in the T Fondaco dei Tedeschi - will host an homage to Terry Riley. Two bands of Ca’ Foscari students - Elettrofoscari and Unive Ensemble - will play Olson III and their compositions. The Ensemble Timegate, specialized in “minimal music”, will then perform Rainbow in Curved Air, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the piece, together with Philip Glass’s works.

On Saturday October 28th there will be two appointments: at 4pm, the Fondazione Ugo e Olga Levi will welcome the British saxophonist Evan Parker, a reference for free improvisation, will perform on soprano sax and direct musicians and stimulate their freedom to improvise; at 9pm, Uri Caine will play piano at the Auditorium Santa Margherita.

On Sunday October 29th, there will be two concerts at  Ca’ Pesaro - Galleria Internazionale d’Arte Moderna: at 2.30pm, Eloisa Manera will present Rondine, a violin and electronic piece; at 4pm, Fabrizio Ottaviucci will play Alvin Curran’s and Terry Riley’s pieces as well as his own compositions at the piano.

Steve Lehman & Sélébéyone will close the festival at 9pm at the Auditorium Santa Margherita with a dialogue between jazz and African hip hop. In wolof, one of the seven languages spoken in Senegal, “sélébéyone” means intersection, crossing, confluence. Lehman decided to name the piece after this word to suggest the encounter between two mixing words.

The concerts and encounters will be free. For more information visit the Festival’s website (in Italian).

For the Concert of October 27th reservation is mandatory (fondaco.culture@dfs.com).

The Festival received the support of the Veneto Region and is part of “Le Città in Festa” organized by the City of Venice. It was organized in collaboration with the Fondazione di Venezia, the Fondazione Ugo e Olga Levi Onlus, the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, the T Fondaco dei Tedeschi – DFS , Beit Venezia – Casa della cultura ebraica, the Conservatorio Benedetto Marcello and Radio Ca’ Foscari as a media partner.
