The European Master Crossing the Mediterranean: towards Investment and Integration (MIM) is a two-year study programme jointly offered by Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia (Venice), Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Barcelona) and Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier (Montpellier).

With an experience of 15 years, the MIM is a highly qualified academic programme focused on Mediterranean exchanges and integration.
Its course is structured to give students a total of 120 ECTS, with three nationally recognized degrees (Magister, M2).

The three universities have an outstanding reputation in their respective fields: languages, history, literature, religion, gender studies of the Southern bank of the Mediterranean (Ca' Foscari); communication, human development, multimedia and Euro-Mediterranean regional integration and migrations (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona); applied social and human sciences, education, European law and immigration policies, migration studies and decentralized cooperation (Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier).

The MIM provides students with the methodological tools to pursue research-oriented activities or research training, and with high-level competences in the field of mediation and cooperation.

Learning objectives

The programme aims to prepare a new generation of Mediterranean specialists who are aware of themes affecting the Mediterranean area, capable of balancing contents, practices, ideas and of building links and networks bringing together academic and non-academic worlds (stakeholders, political actors, economic operators, European citizens, and journalists). It intends to offer an in-depth knowledge of the countries on the southern shores of the Mediterranean and of their interaction with contemporary Europe.

One of the main aims is to help students acquire a critical awareness of issues concerning the Mediterranean in order to train communication specialists (press, television, cinema, social networks, editorial consultancy), transcultural intermediation experts working for cultural associations and organisations, socio-political experts working for think-tanks tackling Mediterranean issues.

The programme is specifically designed to train students in an interdisciplinary context thanks to the collaboration and integration of modules offered by three European universities with competences in the Communication sector (UAB), in European policy studies (UPVM), and in Oriental languages and cultures (Ca’ Foscari).

Curricula

There are no curricula. The study path comprises three modules held in the three partner universities involved (UAB, Ca’ Foscari, UPVM) as well as a complementary module held in a Maghreb university (Sousse/Meknès) or at the University of Strasbourg, and a three-month internship.

Professional profiles

The mobility skills acquired in a plurilinguistic environment equip students for professional contexts involving the promotion of sustainable development projects in the Mediterranean area, in Euro-Mediterranean cooperation, in social, cultural, economic and touristic contexts with a more complex vision of the impact of planning in a specific sensitive geo-political area like the Mediterranean. Students will acquire the competencies needed to enhance the roles of the various civil societies, augmenting and consolidating democratic values, human rights and the legislative role while promoting exchanges and cooperation.
