Measurement of Personal UV Exposures for Primary Skin Cancer Prevention Programmes

Campus Scientifico via Torino - edificio ALFA, Sala Conferenze Orio-Zanetto

Martin Allen, University of Canterbury, New Zealand

Abstract:
Excessive exposure to UV radiation and a history of sunburns in childhood and adolescence can significantly increase melanoma risk in adulthood. Wearable electronic UV dosimeters have been developed at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, to provide a tool for school-children to self-investigate the nature of solar UV radiation. In this talk, I will describe the design and operation of these UV dosimeters and discuss their use in a range of UV exposure and vitamin D synthesis studies, and in a large primary skin cancer prevention programme developed in conjunction with the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, USA.

Martin Allen is an Associate Professor at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand and a Principal Investigator in the MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology. His research interests include the fundamental properties and device applications of transparent UV-sensitive oxide semiconductors and the use of UV sensing technologies in primary skin cancer prevention.
