Building tools and datasets to detect online hate speech: current studies on cyberbullying and islam

seminario on-line

Relatore: Sara Tonelli, Fondazione Bruno Kessler - Trento

The talk will present an overview of best practices and open issues in the creation of tools and datasets to study online hate speech. In particular, we will discuss what are the main challenges of retrieving representative data from social networks to study hate speech, and we will present some activities carried out to collect cyberbullying data during simulations in classes in compliance with privacy and ethical requirements. We will also describe the outcome of monitoring activities carried out on Twitter to study islamophobic messages in English, Italian and French. The analyses show how online discourse in Italian has been strongly influenced by the political situation and recent migration phenomena, while for the other languages different aspects such as religious practices and specific criminal events are targeted.

The seminar will be held online. If you are interested in participating, please send an email to vedph@unive.it
