Sustainable cultural tourism is a strategic priority for the European Commission, since it is an activity able
to encourage and provide access to cultural heritage: however, in the last decades, problems related to
overtourism and to the so-called disneyfication phenomenon have been increasingly central to the debate.
Moreover, the discussed tension between tourism vs. residential use of cultural destinations spaces and
resource assumed a new connotation during the pandemic, which jeopardized the tourism and cultural
sectors and millions of professionals’ livelihoods. The crisis, in fact, highlighted (i) how cultural destinations
relying too heavily on tourism economy are strongly exposed to shocks; (ii) how resilience of cultural
destinations can be linked to their innovation capacity. This resulted in the acknowledgement that a
sustainable development strategy cannot be delayed further, and finding innovative ways to balance
tourism and residential uses of local cultural resources is a strategic priority for resilience of cultural
destinations’ organizations. The answer to this impelling question can be found into innovative processes of
destination management and development, oriented towards participatory processes for defining policies
and strategies of cultural destination sustainable development.
