Pompeii’s Ruins to Be Reconstructed by Robot

Online article

The "RePAIR" project, an acronym for Reconstruction the past: Artificial Intelligence and Robotics meet Cultural Heritage, H2020, has begun in September 2021.
For the first time, cutting-edge technology will be used to physically reconstruct archaeological artifacts that are largely fragmented and difficult to reassemble and the thousands of fragments of the frescoes in the Casa dei Pittori and the Schola Armatorarum will be reassembled.

Partners in the "RePAIR" project, along with the Archaeological Park of Pompeii are: Ca' Foscari University of Venice coordinating partner and PI of the project Prof. Marcello Pelillo, the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel, IIT - Italian Institute of Technology - with the laboratories of robotics and artificial intelligence in Genoa and of the Center for Cultural Heritage Technology (CCHT@Ca'Foscari) in Venice - the Associacao do Instituto Superior Tecnico Para a Investigacao e Desenvolvimento of Portugal, the Rheinische Friedrich Wilhelms Universitat of Bonn in Germany and the Ministry of Culture

At this link an interesting interview to Prof. Pelillo, coordinator of the project for Ca' Foscari University of Venice, on the prestigious scientific journal "Scientific American".
