Abstract:
Morocco is located in the northwestern part of Africa, at the crossroads of the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean sea, and the Sahara, is characterized by a high climatic diversity ranging from humid Mediterranean to arid Saharan conditions, renders it a global hotspot of agrobiodiversity. However, climate change is accelerating the erosion of agrobiodiversity by
intensifying temperature rise, decreasing rainfall, and increasing drought frequency. In this context, our research team (TEDAEEF), focus on the conservation and promotion of
agrobiodiversity, with particular attention to autochthonous varieties (landraces), which are genetically diverse and finely adapted to local ecological conditions. One of our studies
centers on 27 autochthonous grapevine varieties (Vitis vinifera L.), a crop of high agricultural, ecological, and economic importance. We aimed to contribute to the preservation of its
genetic resources while describing its characteristics and evaluating its potential under drought stress conditions. The results obtained from the different grapevine varieties of Morocco
confirmed the presence of an important variability not only inter-varietal but also intra-varietal.
Moreover, it has been inferred that this variability has a crucial role in the resilience of these varieties under changing climatic conditions.
