Elisa Operti | A network perspective on stakeholder strategy

San Giobbe - Room Saraceno

A network perspective on stakeholder strategy: insights from the philanthropic activities of the world’s oldest bank (1996–2012)
Management Lectures by Elisa Operti - Professor of Strategy at ESSEC Business School, Paris.

Bridging stakeholder and network research, we advance a distinction between a one-step strategy, addressing the demands of core stakeholders and a two-step strategy, targeting the needs of peripheral constituencies who depend on the core for key resources. We argue that performance feedback determines the conditions for selecting either strategy. A firm adopts a one-step strategy when performing above aspirations and a two-step strategy when financial performance declines, in a quest for indirect paths to secure support and resources. The dynamic switch between strategies is viewed as an adaptive capability, facilitating firms’ survival when facing competing demands. Support for our hypotheses comes from a longitudinal case study of the donations made by the Foundation of “Monte dei Paschi di Siena.
