Language variation and multimodality in audiovisual translation. Methodological challenges and case studies.
Dora Renna (Ca’ Foscari University of Venice)

In contemporary society, characterized by a constant flow of multimodal products that increasingly blur the lines between screen and reality, audiovisual translation allows overcoming geographical and linguistic frontiers between distant realities across the planet. However, research has long struggled to adapt its methodologies to effectively analyze such phenomenon, and even more to scale its results through larger corpus analyses.
The seminar stems from this premise to explore the multiple challenges of using corpora to tackle language variation and multimodality in audiovisual translation. After explaining the importance of such challenges, the main literature in this field will be critically outlined, detecting both steps forward and limitations.
Finally, a new approach will be presented, whose aim is to create a solid network of relations able to shed light on linguistic and translational choices, as well as on their implications, operatively including multimodality in a rigorous analysis of source and target versions of films characterized by language variation. The illustration of some case studies that are being carried out using this framework will show their innovative potential as an emerging methodology.

Dora Renna is a Research Grant Holder at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, with the project “A Multimodal Study on the Construction and Perception of Linguistic Variation and Stereotypes in Audiovisual Translation,” within the grants awarded by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (MIUR) for the Departments of excellence initiative.
She is also an Adjunct Professor of English at the University of Verona and an editor for the ANVUR-indexed journal of English and American Studies Iperstoria. She has published scientific articles and book chapters in Italy and abroad, and her first monograph on Audiovisual Translation will be published this year by ibidem-Verlag/Columbia University Press. Her main research interests are Translation Studies and Audiovisual Translation, Linguistic Variation, Multimodality, Applied Linguistics and ESP.
