Catalysis has always played a key role in the growth of the Society well-being, allowing the development of new technologies aimed at the production of fuels, materials, drugs, and in general all products used in daily life. A consumerist vision has benefited from the contribution that Catalysis has given in reducing the environmental impact of anthropogenic activities, for example in the abatement of those toxic and harmful compounds that industrial production and the use of consumer goods themselves have generated.

Today, the awareness that this “linear” vision is no longer sustainable forces researchers to reconsider the role of Catalysis to make it the protagonist of the new paradigm of Circularity. In this context, Catalysis has the opportunity to demonstrate, once again, its potential to contribute to the growth of industrial innovation, to respond to the new needs of the Society, and to generate an economic system that is at the same time sustainable and competitive, also providing a contribution to the reduction of social inequalities in an open and inclusive science perspective.

Key enabling technologies, such as nanotechnologies, advanced manufacturing, advanced materials, industrial bio-technologies, are based on the ability of Catalysis to feed the value chain of the production system by facilitating transformation processes that in the coming years will be aimed more and more at the transformation of waste, secondary raw materials, carbon dioxide, at the recovery and chemical recycling of goods, at the production of hydrogen from new raw materials, at the valorisation of biomass and bio-based platform molecules, the production of bio-fuels and bio-molecules. It is a challenge that asks us to also review the ways by which these transformations are carried out, employing alternative energy sources, such as photo-catalysis and electro-catalysis, and applying those principles of “sustainable chemistry” that have real prospects for practical use.

In this context, and within a rapidly evolving landscape, the XXII National Congress of Catalysis aims to review the national research in these areas, thus providing its own contribution to the advancement of knowledge and to the application of that collaborative and multi-disciplinary approach which is an essential condition for a rapid achievement of the objectives that today the Society asks to scientific research.

The official language of the congress will be English.
