Title of the module: The contribution of Portuguese to the comparative analysis of Romance languages: the case of word order and information structure.
The general goal of the course is to deepen the contribution of the linguistic study of Portuguese to the comparative analysis of Romance languages, with a particular focus on the issue of word order and its relation with the sentence's information structure.
Knowledge and understanding:
To know the proprieties and syntactic structures of Portuguese in the Brazilian and Portuguese variants; in particular the unmarked and marked orders of the constituents within the sentence, the proprieties of the subject, the position of adverbs, the properties and behavior of stressed and clitic pronouns. A particular attention will be paid to the study of the acquisition of these structures and the relevance of the acquisition data to the theory of language.
Capacity to apply knowledge and understanding:
To be able to recognize and describe the syntactic constituents of Portuguese;
To be able to carry on specific syntactic analyses;
To be able to motivate and argue for or against a specific analysis;
To be able to explain and apply syntactic notions to concrete exemples;
To be able to read and understand a scientific text;
To be able to apply the adequate terminology in the description of syntactic phenomena;
To be able to autonomously value arguments about contents and to know how to present these arguments in Portuguese with adequate communicative ability.
Autonomy of judgment:
To be able to argue for a given hypotheses in Portuguese and to produce examples for the support or refutation of the hypotheses.
4. Communication skills:
Ability to express, in written Portuguese, the hypotheses and the linguistic aspects treated during the course, using the adequate and specific terminology of linguistic studies.
To be able to interact with peer and teacher in a respectful and critical way during class.
5. Learning capacity:
To be able to develop a critical reasoning.
To be able to convey information, ideas, problems and solutions to an expert and non-expert audience in Portuguese.
To be able to search and obtain the relevant bibliographic sources to study a linguistic phenomenon.
