Course objectives
Module 1 Intercultural awareness
This module has the following objectives:
- to define 'culture'
- to understand the concept of the cultural iceberg and to recognise some of your own cultural values
- to nderstand the siginicance of 'international English' and ELF.



Module 2 Developing intercultural skills
- to understand the importance of 'politeness' and the use of appropriate language for different communicative contexts
- to develop awareness of different coutry contexts

Modulo 3 Putting your skills into practice Lessons 11-15
This module is dedicated to applying your intercultural skills to specific contexts
The specific objectives are to:
- apply the knowledge nd skills of the previous modules
- to simulate authentic intercultural contexts and discuss how to manage them
Pre-requirements
A B2 level on the Common European Framework. An interest in deepening own understanding of intercultural notions and improving own communicative competence.

Definition of 'culture'
Creation of own cultural iceberg
Activities to raise awareness of different language alternatives
Study of different 'national' and 'regional' cultures
Discussion of non-verbal language characteristics e.g. gestures
Management of critical incidents

Mixed, with extensive use of authentic materials and examples. Lesson summaries will be provided on-line, together with supplementary materials to help students practise further.
