The Chinese language course 3.2 is one of the courses characterizing the BA Degree Program in Languages, cultures and societies of Asia and North Africa. It aims to provide students with intermediate level tools and skills in the language and translation fields. The goal is to make them possible to apply their language skills and abilities in different communicative situations, as well as in reading and understanding intermediate texts on economic, political and social topics, so as to make it a key tool to acquire a solid knowledge of contemporary Chinese society.
The aim of the course is to achieve a level of language proficiency equivalent to level B2- of the CEFR (Common European framework of reference for language proficiency). In particular:

1. Knowledge and understanding
1.1 Know the key sentences necessary to interact in business communication contexts.
1.2 Know a lexicon of about 1300 characters and 1850 words, including economic and business terms (active competence).
1.3 Have a solid knowledge of the grammatical system of modern Chinese, with particular attention to the syntax of written Chinese.

2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
2.1 correctly use the key sentences necessary to interact in business communication contexts.
2.2 understand intermediate written texts on eonomic-commercial topics, politics, society, recognizing characters and understanding the sentence structure.
2.3 analyze and translate correctly into Italian intermediate texts on eonomic-commercial topics, politics, society (translation from Chinese).
2.4 write using a lexicon of about 1300 characters and 1850 words, including economic and commercial terms.
2.5 analyze and translate correctly into Chinese sentences including relatively complex grammatical structures (translation into Chinese).

3. Judgement capacity
3.1 assess the level of one’s language knowledge, skills and abilities.

4. Communication skills
4.1 express the specificities of linguistic and textual analysis using proper terminology.

5. Learning skills
5.1 connect different fields of study and apply your knowledge and skills for personal and professional growth.

- To attend the course, students are required to have a very good theoretical and practical knowledge of the Italian language: they should be able to express themselves correctly both in writing and in oral form, and master the tools of grammatical analysis and logical analysis.
- Students are required to have a solid knowledge of the modern Chinese grammar.
- Only students who have passed the exam of Chinese Language 3.1 are admitted to take the exam.
Reading comprehension and translation practice on Chinese texts pertinent to politics, economy, and society (30 hours).
Practice A: Conversation focused on business Chinese (60 hours).
Practice B: translation into Chinese (60 hours);
Practice C: conversation tutorial for small groups.

ITALIAN-CHINESE TRANSLATION (Niu Guoqiang):
1. Niu Guoqiang, Yi-Han fanyi jiaocheng, Venezia, Cafoscarina, 2005.
The final exam consists of three parts:
a) a conversation in Chinese
b) written translation of a short text from Chinese into Italian
c) written translation of sentences from Italian into Chinese
In order to pass the exam, students must obtain a grade equal or above 6/10 in each of the above mentioned parts.
Teaching is organized in (a) frontal lectures; (b) writing and conversation practice aimed at building and consolidating the knowledge, skills and competences necessary to meet the goals of the course; and (c) tutoring aimed at discussing and clarifying specific language problems emerging during classes.
