Course objectives
The course aims at defining principles and applications of environmental sustainability in the context of sustainable development. It will provide the students with conceptual frameworks, methodologies and techniques for the implementation of environmental sustainability in assessing and managing environmental resources, industrial products and technologies.
Pre-requirements
Background in environmental impact assessment methodologies and tools.
Contents
Introduction to the principles of environmental sustainability (ES)
ES in the context of sustainable development
Procedures and techniques for implementing ES: Assessment and management of environmental risk, Life cycle assessment, Agenda 21.
ES and decision making: decision support systems for environmental management.
Implementation of ES in:
assessment and management of marketed chemicals, contaminated sites, natural waters (surface, ground- and marine waters), climate change and engineered nanoproducts.

One day participation to Ecomondo (RiminiFiera)

Written exam consisting of four open questions to be answered in two hours.
Active participation to lectures and to other activities (e.g. Ecomondo) is positively evaluated.
