Course objectives
The course is aimed at providing students with the bases on environmental management and protection, in the light of natural ecosystems conservation and restoration. The main ecological values, which safegard assures the maintenance of ecosystem goods and
services in time, are described. In particular, the main issues on the conservation and restoration of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems are discussed, also through the analysis of appropriate study cases.

Definition and scope of restoration ecology. Biodiversity: definition and
levels, biodiversity loss, relations between biodiversity and ecosytem functioning, biodiversity conservation. Ecosystem description and valutation. Ecological foundations of RE. Disturbance, stability and resilience. Targets and levels in RE. Restoration of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Analysis of study cases.
