The student will have the possibility to experiment with mechanical, thermal and rheological properties of polymers, metals and nanosystems, putting into practice the knowledge acquired in the already attended courses or giving preliminary notions and experimental basis useful for the course "Chemistry of polymeric materials", which is held in the second semester. The foreseen experiments concern both traditional materials (commercial polymers and steel), and innovative materials (luminescent nanoparticles and polymers composites with anti-bacteria properties). Some materials will be synthesised during the laboratory and will be then characterised with different experimental techniques: IR spectroscopy, electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and others. Furthermore some characteristic properties will be measured (mechanical, electrical, optical).
The student will further develop his skills to manage a scientific experiment and will get acquainted with the properties of some materials. Moreover, the experiments on innovative materials will open to the student a window on some area of current research, confronting the studenturrent scientific literature. Writing the Lab reports will stimulate the student to the use of the scientific language and of the correct linguistic register, similar, but to equal, to that of a scientific paper.
The student needs to have attended the Laboratory course of the previous two years and need the basic knowledge of chemistry, physics and physical chemistry.
Basics of the structure of solid state materials and X-ray diffraction.
The following experiments will be carried out in groups of three students each:

- Strain-stress deformation curves of polymers and metals
- Synthesis of polystyrene
- Measure of the molecular weight of the synthesized polystyrene, by using SEC and viscometry
- Microdurimeter
- Synthesis and characterization of nano particles
- Production and characterization of polymers with anti-bacteric properties
- William F. Smith, Scienza e Tecnologia dei materiali, McGraw-Hill, 1995
- Matthews G.P. Experimental Physical Chemistry, Clarendon Press (Oxford) 1985
The students will write a laboratory report on the carried out experiments. The group will discuss their report with the teacher and will have to show to have understood the experiment and to be able to explain them with clarity and using proper scientific terminology.
The course is organised in:
a) class lessons
b) laboratory experiments where students, working in groups of tree, gather the experimental data and make a preliminary data evaluation.
