Course objectives
Bourgeois Comedies and Humour: Miguel Mihura.

Through Mihura's plays we shall sketch an outline of Spanish history from the Second Republic until the beginning of the so called Transition. An "escapist" theater, not completely disengaged that, through a tender humor and paradoxical characters, aims at entertaining the audiences, particularly in Madrid theaters. Sometimes Mihura's characters had to face censorship and ecclesiastical disapproval: he, however, accepted francoist order even though he sometimes criticized the bourgeois values of his audiences by means of some moral transgression, both personally and literarily speaking.
During the course a survey of Spanish literature from 1930 up to the present day, will be offered along with an introduction to some of the main issues in contemporary Spanish history in connection with Mihura's plays. Students will also be offered some lectures on the theory of humour, as far as the author's comedies are concerned and the use of irony and the comic materials.
