The aim of the course is to give the tools to understand what are the key elements to be considered during the preparation of a management plan, regarding renewable resources in marine environment. Particular emphasize will be devoted to the ‘participatory approach’ as a crucial issue in determining the success of a management strategy implementation.
Moving from the Ecosystem Services definition, the attention will be focused on those ecological processes which determining the ecosystem functioning, are expected to directly affect the services supply. Subsequently, it will be possible to define the renewable resource concept and describe the key issues about the exploitation process.
The ecological disturbance concept and its main features will be used to analyze the procedure of the impact assessment within a context of the renewable resource exploitation. The Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) approach will be discussed, taking into consideration legislation, criticalities and main gaps. In particular, the Ecosystem Approach, the Maritime Spatial Planning and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, recently implemented by EU, will be assumed as the basis for the management planning.
Starting from some examples of 'good’ management strategies failure, the elements needed to improve the management plans implementation will be discussed. In particular, the attention will be focused of the stakeholders’ engagement, in terms of the important contribute rising from the adoption of the bottom-up/participative approach.
None. The material used during the teaching and other scientific paper, will be made available for the students.
Group discussion and results presentation
Frontal teaching combined with group discussion about the preparation of a management plan regarding the eploitation of a renewable resource located along teh coast of the Northern Adriatic Sea, moving from the real condition, in terms of stato of resources, conflics and impacts.
