Academic year 2017/2018 MATEMATICA-2 ET0045 (AF:257978 AR:149836) Frontal Lesson 6 out of 12 of MATHEMATICS Surnames Dl-Pas Bachelor's Degree Programme SECS-S/06 2nd Term 1 VENEZIA
Course objectives
The main Calculus (one or more variables) and Linear Algebra concepts are presented. In order to develop language precision and a rigorous reasoning, several examples and applications to economics are discussed during the lectures.
Pre-requirements
Topics usually taught in undergraduate courses are assumed to be well known, in particular: Set theory notation, real numbers; Algebraic rules; fractions; powers; inequalities; absolute value; Single variable elementary functions, linear, power, exponential, logarithmic and their graphs; Graphs obtained by translation from graphs of elementary functions; Equations and inequalities (even parametric), first and second degree, fractional, exponential and logarithmic; Analytical geometry: Cartesian coordinates, distance between two points, equation of a straight line, parabola and circumference and their graphic representation; Symbol of summation.
Contents
Written exam.
The exam consists in 4 exercises concerning the first part of the course (chapters 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 of the textbook) and 4 exercises concerning the second part of the course (chapters 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 of the textbook) with open questions; among the exercises, at least 4 will be taken from the MyMATHLAB platform.

Partial exams
A possibility of an intermediate evaluation of the students' preparation level (first partial exam) will be provided at the end of the first teaching period (first 5 weeks), provided that the students solved the exercises assigned weekly on the MyMATHLAB platform which associated to the textbook. The students with sufficient preparation level at this stage will be allowed to answer only to the questions concerning the second part of the course (second partial exam, chapters 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 of the textbook) at the first written exam (primo appello). The final evaluation in this case is obtained as the mean value of the two partial examinations.

Assessment methods
Written exam. In case of a sufficient written exam (with an evaluation of at least 18/30) it is up to the student to ask for an additional oral examination; in the latter case, the final evaluation is obtained as the mean value of the two examinations.
A possibility of an intermediate evaluation of the students' preparation level may be provided at the end of the first teaching period (first 5 weeks), the students with sufficient preparation level at this stage will not be required to answer to the questions concerning the first part of the course during the first written exam session, the final evaluation is obtained as the mean value of the two partial examinations.
Teaching methods
Traditional lectures on theory and exercises. Tutorship is possible upon registration as will be explained during the first lecture.
