This is one of the basic courses within the common route of the Corso di Laurea "Languages, Cultures and Societies of Asia and Mediterranean Africa".
Its formative objectives are within the area of language skills learning.

By the end of the course students should be able to:
- demonstrate awareness of how to manage cultural differences and stereotypes
- use different forms of English according to the specific context.
- show awareness of how to manage cultural misunderstandings.
- express their opinions effectively in writing

A B1-B2 level on the Common European Framework. An interest in deepening own understanding of intercultural notions and improving own communicative competence.
Module 1 Intercultural awareness Lessons 1-5
This module has the following objectives:
- to define 'culture'
- to understand the concept of the cultural iceberg and to recognise some of your own cultural values
- to understand the significance of 'international English' and ELF.

Module 2 Developing intercultural skills Lesson s 6-10
- to understand the importance of 'politeness' and the use of appropriate language for different communicative contexts
- to develop greater awareness of different cultural contexts

Module 3 Putting your skills into practice Lessons 11-15
This module is dedicated to applying your intercultural skills to specific contexts
The specific objectives are to:
- apply the knowledge and skills of the previous modules
- to simulate authentic intercultural contexts and discuss how to manage them

To help students with the final written exam, students will be provided with practice in writing academic English e.g how to structure a paragraph and make reference to external sources.

Written exam - 45 minutes. 8 Multiple choice, 2 open questions and 1 analysis of a critical incident
+ 45 minute language exam (for students without B2 certification); True/false reading comprehension (5 marks), grammar multiple choice (10 marks), lexical gap fill (5 marks) + listening (10 marks)
Mixed, with extensive use of authentic materials and examples. Active student participation is necessary for a successful course outcome. Additional materials will be provided on-line so that students can explore topics further.
The English Language course will be accompanied by language practice sessions with a language assistant ('lettorato').
