ROMANCE PHILOLOGY II

Why is Italian literature a Romance literature (II)? "King Charles returned from the war ...": the Epic narrative form in France and in Italy (XI-XVI century). 2. The "chansons de geste" and Italy.
The course is part of a series (started in 2017-2018: Boccaccio and Old French narrative) which intends to analyze the relationship between the Romance literatures and Italian one in the Middle Ages. In this case the object is the epic form: the "chansons de geste" were texts of the literary tradition in France (a popular form of historiography on the origins), which enjoyed great success in Italy up to the XVIth century century, to provide Ludovico Ariosto with the "matière" for a brilliant reinterpretation of feudal fictional structures in the form of the poem in verse.

Knowledge.
- basic knowledge of comparative literature (Romance Middle Ages);
- knowledge of the fundamental theoretical-methodological elements of medieval philology;
- knowledge of the essential elements of the morphosyntactic structure of a medieval Romance language (Old French);
- knowledge of the main digital tools (databases) in the field of medieval vernacular literature.
Skills.
- ability to apply, in concrete and specific cases, the theoretical-methodological tools typical of the comparative analysis of texts belonging to different linguistic identities;
- ability to reflect on the peculiarities of linguistic use in the literary field (Italian and medieval French) through the exercise of translation.

It is strongly recommended that you first attend (and preferably pass) the exams of History of the Italian language and of Institutions of phylology; a basic knowledge (at least) of the Latin language, of Medieval history and of the Italian literature of the Origins may help a lot.

French epic and Its reception in Italy:
(1) "Franco-Italian" texts and codices;
(2) the feudal imagery: from the frescoed houses to the Opera dei Pupi;
(3) the feudal "matière" in the "ottava" narrative: from the "cantari" to Ariosto.

The texts to be commented in the lectures and the exercises will be provided in digital format during the course.

The examination is oral, and concerns the analysis of the themes and texts presented in class and in the bibliography.

The course includes: 30 hours of lessons face to face; 20 hours of exercises.

Italian

1. "Romance Philology II" is the second part of the course "Romance Philology" for those who are required to 12 CFU of this discipline, and is an additional course (6 CFU) for those who have attended the course of "Romance Philology I "; it is not possible to take the examination of "Romance Philology" 6 CFU attending this course (but it is obligatory to attend the course of "Romance Philology" and the exercises indicated in 2).
2. Throughout all the second semester there will be a cycle of 10 exercises (20 hours) on history of French language and literature in the Middle Ages; attending it is strongly recommended, just because it is a preliminar part of the examination a translation exercise of 7 texts chosen from A. Varvaro, «Avviamento alla filologia francese medievale», Roma, NIS/Carocci (any edition).
3. There are personalized programs for students who can not attend classes, which will be given after a personal interview during the hours of students' reception.
