This course is made up of 12 lessons (2 ½ hrs each) and provides a quick introduction to Italian culture from the Renaissance to our days, focusing, wherever it is relevant, on the role of Venice in order to offer exchange students the chance to get to know the city while learning about Italy. We will study the following texts:
- The catholic revival and Venice as a sanctuary from Inquisizione.
- The libertines in Venice. Publishing, Bembo: I dialoghi asolani.
- Giacomo Casanova: excerpts from his memoir.
- Lorenzo Da Ponte and three operas for Mozart (Nozze di Figaro) Part 1
- (Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte). Part 2
- Ugo Foscolo. Alla sera
- Leopardi. L'infinito
- Development of the novel in Europe and Alessandro Manzoni
- Tiepolo, Longhi e Guardi
- Visit to Ca'Rezzonico and/or Querini Stampalia
- D'annunzio and Montale. I limoni
- The period after the war. From Hemingway to our days.
This course will provide a quick introduction to Italian culture from the Renaissance to our days, focusing, wherever it is relevant, on the role of Venice in order to offer students the chance to get to know the city while learning about Italy, through the works and authors of Literature, Opera and fine Arts.
