The objective of this module is to present the main benefits that the “structured” database technology can offer in the Digital Humanities field. The students will learn how to build a database by first “modeling” a situation of their interest with a high level modeling formalism, and then transforming such a model into a digital representation for the most commonly used tool for the storage of structured data: the “Relational Database Management System”. The main characteristics of such systems will be presented, together with an overview of their standard query language SQL. Finally, such systems will be compared with technologies used for treating “unstructured” data.

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• understand the main differences between structured and unstructured data representation in the Humanities field, together with advantages and disadvantages of both approaches;
• build a conceptual model of real situation in a Digital Humanities context;
• create a simple relational database and use it both through a graphical interface.
Definitive programme.
