This course provides a quick introduction to Italian culture from the Renaissance to our days, focusing, wherever it is relevant, on the role of Venice in order to offer exchange students the chance to get to know the city while learning about Italy.The following texts will be studied:
- The catholic revival and Venice as a sanctuary from Inquisizione.
- The libertines in Venice. Publishing, Bembo: I dialoghi asolani.
- Giacomo Casanova: excerpts from his memoir.
- Lorenzo Da Ponte and three operas for Mozart (Nozze di Figaro) Part 1
- (Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte). Part 2
- Ugo Foscolo. Alla sera
- Leopardi. L'infinito
- Development of the novel in Europe and Alessandro Manzoni
- Tiepolo, Longhi e Guardi
- Visit to Ca'Rezzonico and/or Querini Stampalia
