The aim of the course is to analyse the role of the public sector in a mixed economy. The focus will be on exploring the reasons behind government intervention, its impact, and the use of taxes to finance public sector activities as well as other welfare interventions.

Income distribution and welfare programmes
The recommended textbook for the course is Jonathan Gruber, Public Finance and Public Policy: Fifth Edition (2016). The textbook will be complemented by parts from The Economics of the Welfare State by Nicholas Barr (Oxford Un. Press, Third edition) and by additional teaching material made available in Moodle.

The exam is written; it includes questions of different type: theoretical ones, true/false statements, analytical and numerical exercises. It lasts about 1.5 hours.
Homework may be assigned during the classes.
The course mostly follows a conventional teaching approach, accompanied by specific active learning activites
