Descrizione dell'attività di ricerca svolta nel triennio e gli obiettivi futuri

I am currently working on a book based on extensive archival research and fieldwork provisionally titled Altar Modern: Buddhism and Technology in China, which I will submit to the Routledge Critical Studies in Buddhism Series in the summer of 2020. The book will be the first to map out the many modes in which Chinese Buddhists understood, adopted and used modern communication technologies. Its main focus is on urban audiences and urban practitioners and their relationship with novel modes of viewing and listening. In collaboration with Anna Greenspan, I am working on a book project that seeks to question the ‘progressive’ temporal underpinnings of modernity in China. Its aim is to question the ‘nature’ of the future Chinese metropolis by exploring how various kinds of practitioners engage with traditional ideas and practices of ‘cultivation.’ I am also researcher and part of the team of "Zaanheh: A Natural History of Shanghai" an interdisciplinary project that explores the history of Shanghai’s urban ecology in order to reimagine the future city as it adapts to a changing environment, https://zaanhehproject.hosting.nyu.edu/
