Sustainability, Ca' Foscari is highly commended at GUPES Green Gown Awards

Ca' Foscari University of Venice was Highly Commended at the GUPES Green Gown Awards ceremony, held at MIT in Boston. This comes as important recognition, demonstrating the commitment of the university towards spreading a culture of sustainability among students and involving them in interactive activities, spanning across different fields of interest.

The prestigious international GUPES Green Gown award is sponsored by the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC) in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the Global Universities Partnership on Environment and Sustainability (GUPES), and is part of the Green Gown Awards. The award, assigned for the first time this year, acts as important global recognition, praising the best efforts in higher education establishments taken towards environmental sustainability, by members of the GUPES.

The award was born with the aim of highlighting and promoting sustainability activities and initiatives, ensuring examples of these are readily available, acting as inspiration for everyone.

The members of GUPES, divided in six regions, selected a specific category, taking into account the usual initiatives carried out in their individual areas.
The following shows the chosen categories for each region:

  • Africa: Continuous Improvement: Institutional Change;
  • Asia and the Pacific: Community Engagement;
  • Europe: Student Engagement;
  • Latin America and the Caribbean: Community Engagement;
  • North America: Student Engagement;
  • West Asia: Continuous Improvement: Institutional Change.

Our University, a member of GUPES since 2012, participated in this first edition of the Green Gown Awards, presenting a project for student involvement: Using art to promote sustainability: the “Dancing Solar Flowers”. The Alexandre Dang art installation consisted of hundreds of dancing flowers and was housed in the courtyard of Ca' Foscari palace from May to November 2015.

The GUPES Green Gown Awards ceremony opened the third edition of "World Symposium on Sustainable Development at Universities" which was held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from the 14th to the 16th of September.
