On October 9th Professor Vincenza D’Urso was awarded the Culture Merit Medal by the President of the Republic of Korea, Park Geun-hye during a ceremony in front of 3,000 people at Sejong Cultural Centre in Seoul.

The medal was presented by Korean Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn as part of the celebrations for the 570th anniversary of the Korean alphabet (Hangeul Day) "in recognition of and in appreciation for her outstanding and meritorious services rendered toward the development of Hangeul by research and dissemination of Korean Language”.

The ceremony was attended by noted representatives of important research institutes involved in the dissemination of Korean language and culture the world over including the Director of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura (IIC) in Seoul, Prof. Angelo Gioè, as well as a number of Ca’ Fosari students currently studying in the Korean capital through the Overseas international mobility programme.

This is not the first time the Korean language and literature Faculty member (Department of Asian and North African Studies) has received recognition: in 2009 she was awarded the LTI Korea Translation Award by the Literature Translation Institute of Korea on behalf of the Korean Ministry for Culture, Sport and Tourism for her Italian translation of Sok-yong Hwang’s novel “The Shadow of Arms”.
