In October 2021, sixty teachers from Libya arrived in Venice to start training at Ca’ Foscari, just as the week that celebrates the Italian language around the world (18 - 24 October 2021) was about to begin.

This initiative marks a step forward in the pact established in Tripoli in December 2020, which involves the strengthening of bilateral agreements according to the 2008 Treaty on Friendship, Partnership and Cooperation between Italy and Libya.

The agreement was made between the Italian Ministry of Education and the Libyan ministry, with the support of the respective Ministries of Foreign Affairs and of the Italian Embassy in Tripoli. The first group of Italian language teachers was selected for training: in the near future, they will be teaching Italian language courses in Libyan secondary schools. The project was facilitated by the contribution of ITA Airways and of the Venice Marco Polo Airport.

The first part of the course started at the beginning of September with a series of online learning activities that are currently being reinforced thanks to in-person training activities in Venice, as well as an internship which will last two months.

This professional development course was sided by a joint committee made up of representatives of the Italian and Libyan Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Ministries of Education, and the Italian Embassy in Tripoli. The committee will design a syllabus for the teaching of Italian as a foreign language in secondary schools in Libya.

The Rector of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, Tiziana Lippiello, highlights the importance of the scientific and social contribution that the university is making to the international relations between Italy and Libya.

The Italian Minister of Education, Patrizio Bianchi, has expressed his satisfaction with the project which, thanks to the teaching of the Italian language in Libyan schools, contributes to the bilateral relations between Italy and Libya in the educational and cultural field, and reinforces the friendship and mutual understanding between the people of these countries.
