Who were the first inhabitants of Torcello, one the islands of the Venetian lagoon? A team of archaeologists from all over Italy, coordinated by professor Diego Calaon, are currently trying to answer the question at the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice excavation site on the island.

Some clues have already been brought to light: the skeleton of a young adult (probably a female) was recently unearthed, as well as various objects and fragments of ancient structures.

Diego Calaon tells us more about  these important discoveries and the fascinating history of Torcello, in the very first cafoscarinews reportage on the 2018 excavation campaign.
