VEiL at Venetonight

VEiL participated again at the Venetonight, the European Researchers’ Night local event.

The European Researchers’ Night is the largest research communication initiative promoted by the European Commission since 2005 to bring together researchers and the broader public.

For the second year VEiL participated to Venetonight, the Venetian event associated to the European Researchers’ Night, a partnership between Ca’ Foscari, the University of Padua, and IUAV University of Venice.

In VEiL’s stall, equipped with a large screen and some computers, VEiL PI Arianna Traviglia led the participants through the fundamentals of archaeological reconnaissance, showing how to visually identify over satellite images potential archaeological sites still hidden in the subsoil.

Participants had the opportunity to learn about the phenomena that determine the appearance of archaeological marks on the ground and crops as recorded on satellite images and worked hands-on to detect some of them in different geographic areas.

Young and very students up to the age of 4 demonstrated to be the keenest investigators, succeeding in detecting on screen potential archaeological sites represented by cropmarks and soilmarks.
