PhDs on Innovation-related and Green-related topics: new funds from PON Ricerca e Innovazione 2014-2020

With Ministerial Decree 10 August 2021, n. 1061, new ESF REACT-EU resources have been assigned for active and accredited PhD programs within the XXXVII cycle and for national doctoral programs.

In particular, action IV.4 of the Program aims to promote research activity on the themes of innovation, digital and enabling technologies and, at the same time, to support the enhancement of human capital, as a determining factor for development. of research and innovation in Italy.
Action IV.5, on the other hand, has the objective of enhancing the human capital to be engaged in PhD programs on topics oriented to the conservation of the ecosystem, biodiversity, the reduction of the impacts of climate change and the promotion of Sustainable Development.
The research activities must also be consistent with the lines defined in the SNSI and in the NRP to encourage the spread of an approach open to innovation and greater interchange between the world of research and the world of production. 

The three-year rPhD programmes take place according to the terms established by the University regulations in compliance with the timing of the PhD programes of the XXXVII cycle.

Candidates in possession of the following requirements, regardless of age or nationality, may apply to participate in the competition:

  • "Laurea specialistica" or "laurea magistrale" (second cycle degree);
  • or degree awarded under the system ("ordinamento") in place prior to the one introduced by Ministerial Decree (D.M.) no. 509 of 03 November 1999, amended by Ministerial Decree (D.M.) no. 270 of 22 October 2004;
  • or second-level academic qualification ("titoli accademici di secondo livello") awarded by institutions belonging to the AFAM ("Alta Formazione Artistica e Musicale") sector;
  • or a Master's degree awarded abroad, recognised as such in advance solely for the purpose of admission to the competition. The foreign academic qualification must allows enrollment in a PhD programme in the country of achievement.

Applications from students already enrolled in PhD Programmes of the Ca' Foscari University of Venice or, in case of Inter-University PhD programme, in the Universities affiliated will not be considered valid.

Those who are preparing for a degree can make application by the deadline, as long as they obtain the qualification by October 31st, 2021.

By November 2nd, 2021, the candidates who are preparing for a degree are requested to communicate the qualification to the PhD Office by e-mail, to  phd.application@unive.it

The University will exclude those candidate who do not communicate either the graduation date or the final mark within the limits laid down, or who submit uncompleted, incorrect or misdelivered statements.

All PhD students are required to have certified English proficiency at least B2 level at the time of enrolment, except for the possibility of acquiring it subsequently, but and not later than April 30th 2022, otherwise they will be excluded from the PhD programme.

The PhD Degree is open to a limited number of students. More details on constraints, obligations and requirements for each scholarship can be found in Annex A to the Call.

Below are the scholarships available for each PhD programme. The PhD scholarships are all subject-specific and provide for a period of compulsory study and research in the company from a minimum of six (6) months to a maximum of twelve (12) months, pursuant to what the provisions contained in Annex A.

  • Check the admission requirements (art. 3) listed in the Call and in Annex "A";
  • If you have obtained a degree abroad, please refer to art. 4 of this Call or to the webpage concerning the admission requirements;
  • Make sure that you have the documents to be submitted online in the allowed format (PDF).

The application form must be completed exclusively online, before Friday, October 22nd 2021, no later than 1 PM (Italian time), under penalty of exclusion. To be considered valid, all candidates must submit their applications using the online procedure as referred to in the above paragraph.

Do not wait until the due date to apply! If you find you're missing some documents and have problems with internet connection you might not succeed in applying just in time. Even if you have to hand over any printed material, please, do it before the deadline: you may find a queue. Incomplete applications, applications lacking the obligatory academic qualifications shall not be considered valid.

As provided for the art. 5 of the call for application, it is necessay to enclose the following documents to the application form in order to participate in the competition:

  • curriculum vitae et studiorum (European format);
  • research project on the topic of the scholarship for which students wish to participate, in accordance with the provisions of Annex “A”. ;
  • transcript certificate of the Master's degree awarded with the list of exams taken with grades;

Forms

Candidates must refer to the following criteria while drafting the research project, pursuant to art. 3 of Ministerial Decree 1061 of 10 August 2021:

A) Additional Phd Scholarships on Innovation topics (Action IV.4)

a.a) Relevance of the PhD project in relation to the ability to generate a strong added value, in terms of scientific, social and economic benefits on the national territory, thus promoting suitable research models and the training of professionals to respond to the innovation and competitiveness needs of the entrepreneurial system, through the promotion of research on innovation, digital and enabling technologies, supporting the enhancement of human capital, as a crucial factor for the development of research and innovation in Italy.

a.b) Compliance of the PhD programme with the SNSI – National Strategy for Intelligent Specialisation and the PNR – National Research Programme, consistency with Law 240/2010 and Ministerial Decree 45/2013 regarding PhDs, with the aim of encouraging innovation and interchange between the research and production and qualification of the contribution of research projects in the innovation sectors (Law 240/2010, art. 24, par. 3 and subsequent amendments).

a.c) Measurability of the expected results and potential impact of the intervention with reference to the purposes of the REACTEU: inclusion of quantifiable and measurable targets in the PhD project, consistent with the indicators provided for by the reference action of the NOP.

B) Additional Phd Scholarships on Green topics (Action IV.5)

b.a) Relevance of the PhD project in relation to the ability to generate a strong added value, through the enhancement of human capital, in terms of scientific, social and economic benefits on the national territory, thus promoting suitable research models and contamination of knowledge and skills able to foster the development of innovative products and services with a lower impact on the environment, focused on issues geared towards the conservation of the ecosystem, biodiversity, as well as reducing the impacts of climate change and promoting sustainable development, as a contribution to boost green recovery and recover from the effects of the crisis in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

b.b) Compliance of the PhD project with the National Strategy for Intelligent Specialisation (SNSI) and the National Research Programme (PNR), consistency with Law 240/2010 and Ministerial Decree 45/2013 regarding PhDs, through the funding of PhDs in the Green field.

b.c) Measurability of the expected results and potential impact of the intervention with reference to the purposes of REACTEU: inclusion of quantifiable and measurable targets in the PhD project, consistent with the indicators provided for by the reference action of the NOP

It's also necessary to enclose:

  • a valid copy of a non expired identity document

The submission of the application is in two steps, both mandatory to the proper participation in this tender (see also Article 6 paragraph 2 of the Call):

First Step

  • Registration on the university website; you will find all information about Registration and password recovery if you already have registrated at  Registration and password recovery page. WARNING: Do registration does not mean you have applied; To apply read Second Step (below).
  • TAX CODE:  tax code is an alphanumeric code that needs for italian fiscal purpose. It is not a problem if you have not an italian tax code: when you insert your personal data, the computer system will automatically calculate the tax code. Remind that code because you have to use the same on the second step of on line application.

Second Step

  • completing and saving the admissions application online for each PhD programme via the specific link at Tab "Scholarships" . If you need to apply for more PhDs, you need to do more separate applications accessing different links indicated in the notice and filling in all the fields whenever.

IMPORTANT WARNING:  The application code will be used to identify the candidate. It will published name and surname only of successfull and eligible candidates on the University website.

Be sure to complete the online application: your application will be fulfilled after receive an email with a receipt with code candidate's application (if you do not receive the email, check your junk mail box / Spam, might be over there). Incomplete applications will not be accepted. In the email is also shown the link from where you can access the application to consult / modify it using your tax code and the code assigned, always within the deadline stipulated by the call.
