It is possible that you may have never heard of Andrew Loog Oldham, Sergej Djagilev, or Domenico Barbaja, but if it wasn’t for them none of us would know who the Rolling Stones or Igor Stravinskij are. They were once called cultural agitators, today they are called businessmen, managers, producers: men and women with an incredible aptitude for finding talent, and, more importantly, the ability to help these people realize their dreams.
Today, to be able to organize and administrate artistic events and cultural activities is a profession one must learn. As a result Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and the Holden School of Turin have created this first level Professional Master’s programme, that takes place over one year, for creative development and cultural activities management. This is an innovative path in the Italian educational panorama that, at the end of the course, will provide an academic title.
Managing a museum, livening up a publishing house, finding funds to finance a theatre show, producing a tv series: these are just some of the area that will be covered by the curriculum. The students will discover the heart of various creative processes by closely observing the work of an actor, novelist, director or story architect. Then they will study the best strategies for taking their practical experience and inserting it into a context that can advertise it and allow them to bring it before the public. Often times success is thanks to the hidden genius that works behind the scenes and not just the great artists in the spotlight.
The highly dynamic evolution of professions in the above areas makes it more appropriate to talk of "competency constellations" rather than profiles, which could swiftly become limiting and obsolete. Particular attention is paid to the conditions favouring lifelong learning and systematic updating of horizontal professional competencies with a particular focus on the entrepreneurial skill set.
It is aimed at those working in the creative professions and intends to equip them with the competencies necessary to work effectively in organised contexts and participating in the realisation of complex projects.
