The programme offers specialized academic training in English and American Studies focusing on the three core areas: literature, linguistics and cultural studies.

The Universities in the consortium, University of Graz (Austria), University of Bamberg (Germany)Université Paris Cité (France), Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Spain)Jagiellonian University in Kraków (Poland), New York City College (USA - mobility partner only), Pécs (Hungary - mobility partner only) and Ca' Foscari University of Venice (Italy), are working together to guarantee a high quality international curriculum with regional features.

Students interested in the programme must apply to one of the consortium partners as their home university. The mandatory mobility semester can be spent at any of the partner institutions.

On the successful completion of the programme, students will be awarded the Master's Degree of their home University and the Master’s Degree of the University where they have spent their mandatory mobility semester, as long as it is a degree awarding institution and not a mobility partner only.
All students will also receive a certificate of completion of the Joint programme.

Students enrolled at Ca' Foscari

The programme aims at promoting cultural exchange between countries and developing strong professional skills in humanities. Students will be able to develop advanced language skills and international cultural knowledge in the field of English and American Studies which should facilitate access to a wide range of international professional positions.

Application and deadlines

To take part in the pre-selection of the European Joint Master's Programme in English and American Studies, applicants must follow the online procedures described on the official Joint Programme website.

Ca’ Foscari students who need Italian/English graduation or enrolment certificates with exams should see details on the page dedicated to certificates, graduation diplomas and supplements.

Students enrolled in other universities should ask their university to release exam certificates in English.

Selections take place yearly; the call for applications for the academic year 2023/2023 will be opened from January 18th, 2023, until April 3rd, 2023. Students who have not obtained their Bachelor’s degree can still apply if they graduate by the autumn session of the same year.

Students are required to attach the language certificate to their application. Students who do not hold a recognized language certificate are required to indicate the approximate date on which they expect to get it.

Selection

When submitting the application students must indicate the partner Universities where they would like to spend the mobility semester, in order of preference.

The selection will be carried out by a Committee with members of each partner Universities. The destination for the mobility semester will be assigned on the basis of a merit ranking and availability of places at the partner institutions. The final allocation may therefore differ from your choice.

Provisional acceptance does not automatically guarantee admission to the programme: after receiving the admission letter for the European Joint Master's Programme in English and American Studies, students must follow the enrolment procedure with particular attention to deadlines.

Enrolment

When enrolling, selected students must choose between the Master’s Degree in European, American and Postcolonial Language and Literature (LLEAP) or in Language Sciences (SL).

In order to complete enrolment, they are required to follow the procedure explained in the section “Enrol” of the page of each degree programme and submit the required documents within the deadlines.

Study Plan

After enrolment students must complete the study plan. For the Master’s Degree in European, American and Postcolonial Language and Literature they must choose between two specializations: "English and American Literary Studies" or "English and American Cultural Studies". For the Master’s Degree in Language Sciences students must choose the study curriculum "English Linguistics". These specializations are recognized by all the partner universities and will allow you to study abroad for a semester.

We recommend students to contact the programme coordinators in Venice (Prof. David John Newbold, Prof. Emma Sdegno and Prof. Giulia Bencini) to decide which exams to take abroad. Please visit the website of the partner University where you will spend the international mobility semester for information about courses.

Mobility Semester

Students will be contacted by the staff of the Counseling and Welcome Unit for information about the procedures to carry out before, during and after the mobility period, taking place in the first semester of the second academic year.

The office will also inform students about scholarship possibilities.

All students will be required to submit a Learning Agreement, listing all the academic activities they are planning to take abroad which will be recognized in their study plan after the completion of the mobility.

In order to be eligible to obtain the double degree, students must pass exams for at least 30 ECTS during the mobility.

Students who will spend their mobility at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona will have to obtain 12 addtional ECTS.

Request to graduate

In order to present the request to graduate, students must follow the standard procedure for all Ca’ Foscari students.
After the thesis defense, it will be possible to request the diploma of the partner University. Both degrees will be legally recognized in the countries of issuance.
Students who have spent the mobility semester at a University which is mobility partner only will have the right to receive the certificate of completion of the Joint programme.

Master’s Thesis

The topic of the Master’s Thesis must be agreed with a supervisor, a Ca’ Foscari professor in American/English literature/culture, linguistics or philology. The supervisor is supported by an external second reader from one of the partner institutions s (usually not the University in which the student spent their international mobility period). The second reader will send a report and an evaluation of the thesis to the examining board.

To find a second reader, and for further information on the procedure and on the nature of the thesis, the supervisor should contact the programme coordinators, Prof. Newbold, Prof. Sdegno and Prof. Bencini.
