This Master’s Programme is a joint venture between the Naval Staff College - Venice, where the naval operating requirements are carried out, and Ca’ Foscari University, where the academic training requirements are fulfilled. This is the first time an Italian Master’s programme curriculum has directed its attention abroad: one can look, for reference, at the “Naval Postgraduate School” of Monterey, California, or the shared programs between “King’s College” of London and the “Defence Academy of the United Kingdom,” based in Shrivenham (UK). This course aims to introduce students to the fundamentals of strategic thought and modern navalistic studies, with some references to classic thinkers and International Law (Maritime, Armed Conflicts, Humanitarian Law). Particular attention will be paid (to asymmetrical warfare, terrorism and) the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, in addition to other peculiar security aspects of the Mediterranean basin, predominantly for Naval and government interests. Other than formal lectures, there will be organized conferences with Italian and foreign speakers. The programme, jointly developed with the Naval Staff College - Venice, is addressed primarily to on duty Officers, nominated by the Navy who, subject to the accommodation capacity of the educational facilities, decides the maximum number of spaces offered for foreign military personnel (based on the specific bilateral agreements with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defense) and eventual “civilian” students. The civilian students will be able to complete the educational requirements within a year, while the Naval officers nominated by the Navy, in order to comply with operational requirements, can complete the Master over the concise period of 13 weeks.
This Master’s is aimed at Naval offic designated by the Italian Navy, students interested in security and other strategic studies, professionals working in the defense industry, international organization officials, and humanitarian workers who desire to gain knowledge about the strategic aspects of their work.
